How is the foundation on which you are trying to build your success?House Falling

Is it strong? Is it weak?

For many chiropractors it is unfortunately non-existent.

Many chiropractors essentially attempt to build their business and life on loose dirt and yet expect it to remain stable and support growth as they pile on more stress, responsibilities, expenses, kids, office protocols, staff, and the list goes on.

There is an often quoted phrase that goes like this… Your thoughts become your words and your words become your actions.

I would say this is fairly sound advice.

The problem is that if you are going to apply it to Success in any personal or professional area of life, then it is woefully inadequate.

For example, just having thoughts (thinking about) and deciding to improve your health will not in and of itself lead to you making the required health changes.

The reason for this is that your ‘thoughts’ are not supported by something bigger and stronger – a Foundation if you will – and so can easily slip away resulting in no words and no actions.

The simple and yet powerful solution that will provide the foundation that will not only support but even help you organize your thoughts and efforts is called Purpose – often referred to as your ‘Why.’

By first defining and identifying with Your Purpose or Your Why for making any change, you will create a strong foundation on which your thoughts, words and actions will be based.

  • Why do you want to get healthier?
  • Why do you want to make more money?
  • Why do you want to be a more assertive person?
  • Why do you want to give back part of your income?
  • Why do you want do more marketing in the community?
  • Why do you want to create better office protocols for the staff?
  • Why do you want to create a better education system for patients?

By clearly defining your Purpose, no longer will your thought be ‘I’m going to get healthy this year,’ but rather it will look more like this:

“I am going to get out in my community at least one weekend a month to introduce more people to chiropractic and get more people under regular care.”

Or…

“I will improve my patient education protocols so that they will better be able to explain chiropractic to friends and family and understand the importance of referring them into my office to get their spine checked.”

Or…

“I’m going to get healthy so I will have more energy for work and family and be the one who sets the example of proper exercise and eating habits for my patients and my own kids to give them the best possible advantage in life.”

Thoughts, words and actions supported by something less solid than a connected purpose may result in a temporary level of drive and enthusiasm but for the long haul it will not support lasting change.

For your determination to make a change that will stick, the desired change must be anchored by a bigger reason.

Once you define your Purpose and are one-hundred percent clear and convicted, it will become much easier to write down your thoughts and confidently create a plan of action on HOW you will accomplish your WHY. From there you just need to take the action necessary to fulfill your personal and professional goals.

Define your purpose for each change you are trying to make. Write it down. Read it 5 times a day for one month. Watch as a more successful version of YOU begins to emerge.
